Miele advertises a 20-year lifespan for their dishwashers, and in our experience servicing them across New York City, that's achievable — but only with consistent care. Here are the five maintenance steps that make the biggest difference.
1. Clean the Filter Weekly
The triple filter system at the bottom of the tub is Miele's most important maintenance point. It catches food particles before they reach the pump. When it clogs — and it will — water drainage slows, cleaning performance drops, and the drain pump works overtime. Remove, rinse under cold water, and reinstall. Takes 90 seconds.
2. Use Miele Descaler Every 3 Months
New York City water is moderately hard — scale buildup in the heating element and spray arms is a real issue over time. Miele's descaler product is formulated for their specific heating systems. Run a descale cycle every three months, or when the machine's descale indicator activates.
3. Inspect Spray Arms for Clogged Nozzles
Remove the upper and lower spray arms every six months and hold them up to the light. Each nozzle should be clear. A toothpick removes mineral deposits from individual nozzles. Clogged spray arms are responsible for the 'dishes aren't clean' complaints we hear most often — and it's entirely preventable.
4. Leave the Door Ajar After Cycles
Miele's AutoOpen drying function does this automatically on newer models. On older units, manually cracking the door open after the cycle completes allows residual steam to escape, preventing moisture buildup that degrades the door seal and interior over time.
5. Use the Right Detergent
Miele machines are calibrated for detergent tablets or powder — not gel. Gel detergents leave a film on the dosing chamber and spray arms over time. Miele's own PowerDisk system is excellent, but any quality tablet detergent works well. Avoid ultra-concentrated pods unless they're specifically rated for European dishwashers.
